1.4547 Product Description

Overview

1.4547 is a special-grade super-austenitic chromium-nickel-molybdenum-copper stainless steel with nitrogen (W.Nr. 1.4547), classified in EN 10088 as an austenitic stainless steel of special grade for highly corrosive service. This datasheet presents the material within the European standard system.

Its high chromium, nickel, molybdenum, copper and nitrogen contents give outstanding resistance to localized corrosion — pitting and crevice corrosion — and to stress-corrosion cracking, together with acceptable seawater-corrosion resistance. It is resistant to intergranular corrosion both in the delivery condition and in the welded (sensitised) condition up to about 400 °C. It combines high ductility and good notch toughness, including at sub-zero temperatures, with strength substantially above the standard austenitic grades. It is fully austenitic and essentially non-magnetic (small amounts of ferrite or martensite from cold deformation can increase magnetisability), and cannot be hardened by heat treatment.

Typical applications include seawater and chloride-process handling, desalination and offshore equipment, flue-gas-desulphurization plant, pulp-and-paper bleach systems, and food and chemical processing equipment. The grade is covered by VdTÜV-Wbl 473 for pressure applications.

1. Physical Properties

Values per reference data (EN 10088 / VdTÜV-Wbl 473), solution-annealed (+AT) condition.

Property Value Unit
Density 8.0 g/cm³
Young's modulus (20 °C) 195 GPa
Thermal conductivity (20 °C) ~14 W/m·K
Coefficient of thermal expansion (20–100 °C) ~16.5 µm/m·°C
Electrical resistivity (20 °C) ~0.85 µΩ·m
Max. temperature (intergranular resistance, welded) ~400 °C
Magnetic response Non-magnetic (austenitic)

2. Chemical Composition (wt %)

Limiting composition per EN 10088-3 (W.Nr. 1.4547).

Element Symbol Min % Max % Role in Alloy
Iron Fe Balance Base element
Chromium Cr 19.5 20.5 Passivity; pitting resistance
Nickel Ni 17.5 18.5 Austenite stability; SCC resistance
Molybdenum Mo 6.0 7.0 Pitting + crevice corrosion resistance
Copper Cu 0.5 1.0 Resistance to reducing acids
Nitrogen N 0.18 0.25 Pitting resistance; strength; austenite stability
Manganese Mn 1.0 Austenite stabiliser
Silicon Si 0.7 Deoxidiser
Carbon C 0.02 Very low (intergranular-corrosion resistance)
Phosphorus P 0.03 Residual impurity
Sulphur S 0.01 Residual impurity

Composition per EN 10088-3 for W.Nr. 1.4547 (X1CrNiMoCuN20-18-7). The EN molybdenum range (6.0-7.0%) and nitrogen range (0.18-0.25%) define this special-grade super-austenitic steel; resistance to intergranular corrosion is retained in the delivery and welded condition.

3. Mechanical Properties

Solution-annealed (+AT) condition, per EN 10088-3 for W.Nr. 1.4547.

Property Value Unit
Tensile strength (Rm) 650–850 MPa
0.2% proof strength (Rp0.2) ≥300 MPa
Elongation at fracture (A) ≥35 %
Hardness ≤260 HB

Properties are quoted for the solution-annealed condition per EN 10088-3. The steel is resistant to intergranular corrosion in both the delivery and the welded (sensitised) condition. Values per EN; confirm against the inspection certificate (EN 10204).

4. Corrosion Resistance

Environment Performance Notes
Pitting / crevice (localized) Outstanding High Cr + Mo + N
Stress-corrosion cracking Excellent High Ni content
Seawater Acceptable / good
Intergranular (delivery + welded) Resistant Confirmed to ~400 °C
Reducing acids Good Copper-enhanced
Sub-zero notch toughness Very good Fully austenitic
Hot oxidising / high temperature Limited A corrosion-resistant grade

5. Heat Treatment

A special-grade austenitic stainless steel; not hardenable by heat treatment. Corrosion properties are developed by solution annealing (+AT).

Solution Anneal heating to the solution-annealing temperature followed by rapid cooling (water quench) to dissolve secondary phases and put molybdenum and nitrogen into solution for optimum corrosion resistance.

Because of the high molybdenum content, rapid cooling from the annealing temperature is essential to avoid intermetallic-phase precipitation. The material is supplied and used in the solution-annealed (+AT) condition; resistance to intergranular corrosion is retained in the welded condition up to about 400 °C.

6. Weldability and Joining

Suitable for welding by manual metal-arc, TIG and plasma welding, using alloyed covered rod electrodes, welding rods or welding wire of the NiCr20Mo9Nb type (per VdTÜV-Wbl 473). The interpass temperature should not exceed about 100 °C; no preheating and no post-weld heat treatment are required. The steel resists intergranular corrosion in the welded condition up to about 400 °C.

Process Applicability Filler / Consumable
TIG / plasma Very good NiCr20Mo9Nb-type wire/rod
Manual metal-arc Good NiCr20Mo9Nb-type covered electrodes

Interpass temperature max. ~100 °C; no preheat or post-weld heat treatment. Over-alloyed (NiCr20Mo9Nb) filler maintains weld corrosion resistance.

7. Machinability and Fabrication

Machining Guidelines

Parameter Recommendation
Machinability Moderate; prone to work hardening; sharp tooling
Speed / feed Lower cutting speeds, greater cutting depths, ample lubrication
Work hardening High; rigid setup, positive feeds
Coolant Ample flood coolant

Forming Processes

Process Notes
Cold forming Cold-rolled strip/sheet, drawn wire and profiles; work-hardens
Hot forming Followed by solution anneal (+AT) + rapid cool
Solution anneal (+AT) Rapid water quench
